Character
Character Name: Nagi "Alice" Arisuin
Canon: Chivalry of a Failed Knight
Canon Point: End of volume 3
Type: Canon
Age: 15
History/Key Points: Alice used to live in a church with a nun, a small group of younger kids she helped take care of, and her best friend Yuuri. One day, a gang kidnapped the kids (bribed to by the mayor because that is totally how you deal with kids being on the streets) and killed Yuuri. In an absolute rage, Alice slaughtered the gang, but in the process scared the crap out of the kids, and she could no longer stay with them. It was shortly after that that a man named Wallenstein offered her a job as an assassin in a terrorist organization in an exchange for a large sum of money, which Alice gave to the nun she had stayed with.
A few years later, Alice enrolls in Hagun Academy, a school for Blazers (people who can produce weapons from their souls) meant to produce fully-trained Mage Knights. She's there as a mole, so that the terrorist organization can infiltrate the Seven Stars Sword Art Festival and cause massive chaos and destruction there.
She's roomed with Shizuku Kurogane, and shortly thereafter becomes close friends with her. Alice asks her to treat her like a big sister, and Shizuku does, often coming to Alice for advice. Alice also becomes friends with Shizuku's brother Ikki, and Ikki's girlfriend Stella Vermillion.
Throughout the early part of the school year, Alice provides advice for the other members of the group, as well as support multiple times (such as when Ikki and Alice are in a mall under attack by Rebellion and Alice keeps Ikki from getting his dumb butt shot up, or when Ikki is about to be lured into a trap by a girl and Alice goes "this is clearly a trap", or when Shizuku loses her match in a knockout tournament and Alice comforts her). She also wins all her qualifying matches, enough to be able to join the team that goes to the Seven Stars Tournament.
This is her initial canon point! Here's some of the stuff that follows after.
After the group heads to the tournament, Alice begins betraying the school properly (stabbing the newspaper president literally in the back), but is finally convinced to switch sides when she offers a drink to Shizuku and Shizuku accepts it as a "special occasion" because it's the first time Alice has ever asked her or anyone to do anything for herself. She betrays Rebellion's plans to her classmates, and gets kidnapped for it, and although she asks Shizuku not to come after her Shizuku chases after her anyway, because they're sisters.
Then Shizuku kicks the guy who kidnapped her's butt and rescues her. Alice resigns from the Seven Stars Sword Arts Tournament team, believing that her presence would be a detriment to the other team members she almost betrayed, and stays around to provide battle commentary and support to her friends.
Personality: Strengths
Anyone who knows Alice will be able to tell you that she gets along with everyone. She's friendly, easy to open up to but doesn't pry. She has a considerable following at school because of both her good looks and her easygoing manner. She's easygoing enough that she says she doesn't really mind what pronouns people use for her - she's just used to it, and it doesn't bother her anymore.
She's an incorrigible flirt with attractive men, and I'm listing this under strengths because she uses it mostly to make men uncomfortable. It's a method of unsettling people as much as it is genuine interest. Probably more.
She's a good source of advice for her friends because she's levelheaded, able to make rational decisions without her mind being clouded by emotional ties. If there's someone who, hypothetically, was friends with her but then turned out to be a murderer, Alice would be able to bounce back from that easily.
Alice is extremely perceptive, able to pin down one of the protagonist's many issues on the first day that she met him. This along with her friendly manner helps makes her an excellent source of comfort for people when they need it, and solidifies her role as 'big sister' of her friend group.
She's also perceptive when it comes to combat - her school focuses on swordplay and magic, and she's usually providing commentary for her friends' matches and quick at figuring out what's really going on in their complex strategies and techniques. Alice is alert and attentive enough that it's noted as extremely strange the one time she's not paying attention to someone talking and has to ask them to repeat themselves.
Weaknesses
The reason Alice can bounce back from her friends becoming murderers or such is because Alice does not easily make genuine emotional ties. She fakes them with the best of them - she's a mole for a terrorist group, she has to - but she cannot trust or love nearly as wholeheartedly as her friends do. She's always going to be suspicious of betrayal. She doesn't open up to anyone, as 'friendly' as she is - she won't talk about herself easily.
Basically everything she does in her daily life involves her putting up a friendly, outgoing mask. In a situation where she had to be honest, she'd be significantly more at a loss... and significantly less nice. She genuinely hates the world, and is bitter and jaded about nearly everything.
Because of little things like 'can't trust people' and 'working for a terrorist group who will eventually kill the people she's pretending to be friends with', Alice has a very low opinion of herself. She'll call herself "ugly" while admiring people who actually can trust others, and doesn't have much of a response when scolded for that. At one point in her youth she wanted to be a noble person, and failing to be that kind of person has hurt her self-esteem considerably.
On the rare occasions when Alice does make strong emotional ties with someone, and then something happens like that person getting killed, the whole 'levelheaded' thing disappears and she flies into a rage. This happened when she was younger to a close friend of hers, and she took out several gangs by herself in a manner so bloody that she could no longer stay with the orphans she took care of - they were too scared of her.
Gem: Zircon on the back of her left hand- "helps one to focus on maintaining ideals while transforming real life to the achievement of those goals." Alice's original ideals of becoming a good person were tainted, but eventually she decides to try to pursue them again, despite how terrible the world can be.
Power Considerations: - Shadow Concealment: Allows her to hide herself in a shadowed area, turning invisible. Different from her canon ability to hide inside of shadows - she's still there, she just can't be seen.
- Blinding: Briefly (a minute?) allows her to completely blind a target. Activated by touch.
- Shadow Healing: Allows her to fix up injuries using dark energy. Capable of healing wounds and nonlethal injuries, but reattaching limbs and healing on that level, not so much.
Extra: Pronoun notes! Alice canonly asks people to think of her as a woman, explicitly denying being either Japan's version of a drag queen or a homosexual man, and I have chosen to interpret her as a trans woman. The novel translations and the wiki have chosen otherwise and given her male pronouns, but I will be using female pronouns for her.
